21 green bedroom ideas to inspire a refresh
In our book, green paint is always a good idea and all too often overlooked. The below green bedroom ideas come in all shades, from soft, pale, barely there flushes on the walls to dark green cocooning gloss paint – and they're all equally covetable. Green is biophilic (meaning it mimics a colour of nature so brings the outside in when used on our walls or in our schemes) and therefore has soothing properties. When deciding on a green paint for your bedroom, first of all consider the light your bedroom gets and when you spend most time in there. If you're a night owl, perhaps drenching the whole room in a dark green would be best, as this will look wonderful in the dark with lamps to light it. Those who are up and at ‘em should consider a paler green that will diffuse the morning sun softly. Whatever you opt for, these green bedroom ideas will persuade you that it’s the sage choice of colour.

With its ‘Poppy Sprig’ paper by GP&J Baker and blue bespoke paint colour ‘25-18D’ from Papers & Paints, this guest bedroom of a Studio Vero house was designed to be suitable for children later on. The headboard by Trove by Studio Duggan is covered in Hector fabric from Vanderhurd. The mid-century chair is upholstered in Compton by GP&J Baker and the fabric for the custom-made bedspread is Morgana from C&C Milano.

The main bedroom of this 18th-century workers' cottage in historic Greenwich, charmingly restored by production designer Anna Rhodes, is a serene and warm space. Soane's ‘Seaweed Lace’ Roman blinds frame the windows. The walls are painted in Farrow & Ball's ‘Dropcloth’ and ‘French Grey’. The cushion is from Volga Linen and the lamp is homemade from an old mochaware jug. On the walls, Nicole Heidaripour's ‘wind pruned’ tree drawings are displayed.

The walls, curtains and valance of the nursery bedroom in Hatta Byng's Georgian house in Yorkshire are in ‘Bowood’ cotton chintz in grey/green, from Colefax and Fowler, creating an enveloping effect and complementing a brass bed, which was created by joining two c1880 singles together.

Pierre Frey's 'Le Paravent Chinois' covers the walls of the master bedroom in this rectory by Tamsyn Mason, chosen by the client. Tamsyn paired it with a headboard and valance in Guy Goodfellow's ‘Roussillon’.

In a small bedroom in Thea Speke's country house, a spare bedroom has been transformed into a cosy space by being drenched in a dark grassy green. This is paired with curtains in a green check from Merchant & Mills, which screen an iron bed from The French House.

For the master bedroom, Thea also chose to use the same shade – Paint & Paper Library’s archive colour ‘Both Barrels’. ‘I wanted it to feel warm and restful up here,’ she says.

In this 1920s house in Berkeley, interior designer Heidi Caillier embraced the flood of natural light on the upper floor with an airy palette in the main bedroom. The primary bedroom is a favorite room of the homeowners, who find the soothing gray green Farrow + Ball ‘Cromarty’ walls and views looking out to the Bay very peaceful.

In the winter bedroom of this Umbrian house by Maria Speake, the limewash on the walls reads as a subtle green. ‘It gets that lovely long and low light at the end of the day and we wanted to maximise that,’ Maria says of the choice.

In the spare bedroom of a Notting Hill flat by Studio Peake, the joinery is painted in Camo 7 by Papers and Paints, a lovely dark green. This pairs with the wall covering, which is Mecox Straw by Colefax and Fowler.

Carlos Garcia has approached the decoration of this early 18th-century house and its Tudor elements with great sensitivity, marrying period details with colour, pattern and contemporary touches. The main bedroom is painted in Edward Bulmer’s ‘Celadon’ – a colour the owner initially hated. Somewhat peremptorily, Carlos told her, ‘Wait until the curtains are up and, if you still don’t like it, I promise I will repaint the room at my expense.’ His gamble paid off and she now loves the room with its curtains and valance in an 18th-century print by Nicole Fabre, a Murano glass chandelier – chosen by Carlos ‘so as not to be too imposing’ – 19th-century botanical prints and the owner’s gilt chairs, inherited from her family in France and upholstered by her grandmother. It is the ultimate retreat from daily life.

In this Tom Morris house, walls in Little Greene’s ‘Olive Colour’ set off the rich blues of a chair in antique Dutch cloth from Howe London and a Melin Tregwynt blanket on the bed, under which is a Turkish cicim kilim rug from Francesca Gentilli. Displayed in the fireplace is an ash vessel by Anthony Bryant and, on the mantel, an abstract painting by Giovanni Mattio. The Seventies brass light by Florian Schulz was chosen to add interest to the room.

The walls in this bedroom – which can be found in interior designer Lucinda Griffith's Welsh cottage – are painted in ‘Kelp’ by Fenwick & Tilbrook, a vibrant and lively green. The four-poster is brightened by a headboard in Jean Monro’s ‘Apperley Bouquet’ linen and a pink Welsh blanket offsets the yellow-green in the most delightful way.

Grounded in a respect for tradition and love of old buildings, Emma Ainscough has brought a refined playful spirit to her London flat, using her favourite colours and patterns throughout. In her bedroom walls in 'Wedgwood Green' by Eico Paints give a soft backdrop the headboard in Bennison's crewelwork 'Jungle Colors on Oyster'. ‘I love green,’ she says, 'it’s made the room feel very calm. It's cool in the summer but cosy in winter.'

In this bedroom of a Georgian house by Ben Pentreath, the classic Morris & Co ‘Marigold’ wallpaper is a subtle way to introduce green, against the bolder panelling painted in ‘Asian Blue’ by Emente.

In the bedroom of Annabel Bevan's London home the walls are painted in ‘Aquamarine’ by Little Greene. This gentle, fresh spring colour diffuses the light perfectly but also picks up the brighter hues of the bed frame.

In novelist Andrew O'Hagan's house, an antique Spanish mirror stands out on Lewis & Wood’s ‘Beech’ wallpaper above a bed from Seventh Heaven, with cushions by Ben Pentreath. The bed is, somewhat surprisingly, the thing that sets the green mood of this room, as the fresher tones on the wallpaper are more subtle.

Olivia Outred is responsible for this fresh bedroom. In the main bedroom, Farrow & Ball’s ‘Drag’ wallpaper in colourway 1252 is similar in hue to Claremont’s ‘Antique Serge’ linen, which was used to upholster the banquette by the window. It also picks up on the muted green tones of ‘Dandelion Clock (Faded)’, a patterned linen fabric from Robert Kime, used for the curtains and headboard.

This Arts & Crafts house decorated by Ben Pentreath features plenty of green and brown shades. The greeny-brown grasscloth in this room is in the colour referred to by Ben as "freshly laid cowpat". ‘I love the richness that grasscloth brings; it has so much more depth than a flat paint,’ he says.

The bedroom of Fabrizio Casiraghi’s apartment is like a cabin, thanks to the use of a Japanese lacquer on the walls in a rich green. It's a bold design, but it works so well in this tiny space.

The wallpaper in this bedroom in Victoria Barker's cottage is by Molly Mahon and is another brilliantly calm and subtle way to introduce a touch of green to a room.

The brief for the main bedroom in a small terrace by Studio Duggan was that it had to be ‘fun but liveable’. The mixture of printed and plain fabrics and Farrow & Ball's 'Pond Green' balances the neutral with the bold.
