The best garden benches: our editors' pick of the crop
When it comes to planning your garden and contemplating the art of garden design, there's one non negotiable element: it's always wise to consider a space to sit like a garden bench. This might be for solitary moments with a cup of tea as you gaze over your handiwork, a place to sunbathe or somewhere to socialise with others. They are all important in their own ways and there are options out there for each scenario. For example, while an outdoor dining area is always lovely to have, it is ultimately designed to place its guests looking inwardly, but it is the trusty garden bench which values the view. If you're a gardener or someone who enjoys using the garden as a space for contemplation or reading, a good garden bench is a must have item.
The best garden benches
Whether you have a small plot, country garden or even a rooftop space, garden benches are the perfect accessory for most outdoor spaces. If your outdoor space is minimal, you may want to consider a garden storage bench where the inside is hollow; there you can keep bits and bobs like gardening gloves, tools or spare pots through winter without them cluttering up your serene space. A bench without a back or arms can also be doubled as a table should the need arise, so it works well for those looking to combine a seating area with a socialising area. In a classic country garden, we favour a sturdy wooden bench or wrought iron piece, with some curvaceous elements to mimic the shape of the plants around it.
Before you position garden furniture, always consider the time you are most likely to use your garden. Do you like breakfast in the sun? Or perhaps you want to soak up the last rays on a warm evening? You will want to make the most of the light at that time so position your seat accordingly! Surround it with a few vibrant plant pots and you'll have a cheerful setting in which to enjoy all your hard work.
What is the best material for a garden bench?
Aesthetically speaking, we would say that wood is the best material for a garden bench, because it fits seamlessly with the setting it's in. A well made, sturdy and properly sealed wooden bench should last a long time, but it is worth noting that wood can fall foul of the elements after some years and without the proper care. If you want a wooden garden bench that can stand the test of time, then teak is the wood to choose for longevity. A metal bench can be very sweet – particularly when painted white – but be aware that it'll be cold in winter and require blankets to sit on. However, come summer, a white metal bench should repel the sun's rays nicely and keep cool. Finally, a rattan garden bench will always be a stylish investment, though do read any accompanying care instructions thoroughly as they require a little more TLC than others.
